Israeli Identity: Politics And Faith

Last summer, I traveled to Melbourne to lecture at the Wheeler Centre, in a symposium on "National Identity and Faith," organized by the indomitable Raimond Gaita.  The lecture recording, and the transcript, are now available online.  So is the panel discussion held after the talk. There are turns in the argument I now wish I had not taken around the 40th. minute, when I might have wrapped things up, rather than try the audience's patience by launching into new, albeit related subjects.  But on the whole, a summary of the tortured ways Jewish orthodoxy afflicts Israeli identity.  It seems of particular interest, since the new government has been put together ostensibly to reverse support for ultra-Orthodox communities. You can hear the lecture here, and read it here.  And here is the panel discussion.
